What is CrossFit?
Our CrossFit program is designed to improve our members’ fitness in the way that is most meaningful for their needs and desires. Everyone has different goals, and yet our program works to help individuals of all skill levels successfully reach their fitness potential. Our CrossFit group classes are expertly coached and offer great motivation to challenge your fitness, help you lose fat, learn proper movement mechanics, and put the fun back into working out! For more, check out our WHAT IS CROSSFIT? page.
What to Expect
Our classes are 60 minutes in length and led by a certified trainer from beginning to end. We keep our class sizes small to enable the coach to interact with each athlete multiple times throughout class. Programming is done in-house, by our head trainer and owner. This allows us to tailor the workouts to our demographic and ensure you are receiving the best workout for your abilities. CrossFit West Ames is a strength-based gym in that we lift every day, using barbells and bumper plates, to continually improve form in these lifts while steadily increasing strength over time. If you have an interest in building even more strength and focusing more on the barbell side of things, check out our AMES STRENGTH CLUB.
Each 60 minute session includes briefing the day’s workout and movements (as well as modifications), warming up, a short skill session followed by the lift of the day, and lastly a workout. Directly following class we encourage or prescribe a cool down or stretching to be done by each athlete before they head home for the day.
We are able to get an extremely effective workout in a 60 minute time frame, which is highly desirable for most individuals who are prioritizing their fitness with several other important obligations every day. The intensity level of CrossFit also means you are doing more work in a shorter period of time than spending an hour lifting at your globo-gym followed by 40 minutes of cardio.
Why We’re Different
There are many reasons why CrossFit is different than other programs – intensity, functionality, community – and we like to distinguish our gym from others even more. The great thing about CrossFit is that you can always be improving. There is always a new skill to learn, a lift to improve on, time to shave off a benchmark workout… We want to help you tackle your next feat, which is why we hold regular workshops to focus on certain higher-level skills. CrossFit West Ames will assign you a primary coach upon signing up, who is your primary contact for goal setting, homework, and accountability. We also do multiple events and social throughout the year that bring us closer as a team and family and allow us to celebrate our friendships.
