Name: Jillian Downey
Profession: Graduate Student (soon to be Statistics Professor)
Start Date: December 28, 2015
I have been dealing with anxiety and depression the entirety of my adult life and I have found that working out really helps me emotionally. Some days, it is a success if I even make it to the gym, other days I am able to push myself and achieve PR’s. Either way, I always leave a workout feeling more accomplished and happier than when I came in. Part of this I attribute to the support and encouragement I get from the people at CFWA. No matter how bad of a day I am having, I look forward to seeing my “CFWA family.”
2. What is the scariest thing you have ever done and/or what are you most terrified of?
I am most scared of failure, specifically when it comes to my education and career. I’m also really scared of rats…yuck!
3. What changes have you noticed in yourself since joining CrossFit West Ames?
Since joining CFWA, I’ve definitely increased my strength, specifically in my upper body. I can now do kipping pull-ups with only one small band (as opposed to 3 large bands when I started). I’ve also become much more aware of my body since starting at CFWA. During workouts, I am now mindful of things (such as tightening my core and engaging my lats) that I never thought about before. I attribute this new found awareness to the amazing coaches at CFWA.
4. Would you rather give up your computer or give up your pet(s)?
Definitely my computer…my pets are the cutest!
5. What are two performance goals you have for yourself now that you’ve been doing CrossFit for a while?
I would like to improve my push-up form, making sure to keep a strict plank during the entire motion. I would also like to overcome my fear of box jumps so I can do them more quickly in workouts.
6. What advice would you give to someone who is considering starting CrossFit?
Do it! CrossFit is a fantastic program that helps you become a well-rounded athlete. I worked out daily before starting CrossFit and I didn’t realize how much my strength training was lacking until I joined CFWA. I also suggest you take the time to find a gym/coach/class time that meets your needs. I know I would not be as motivated to become better at CrossFit if I didn’t have the welcoming environment that CFWA provides me.
