If I’ve never done CrossFit before, is it still right for me?
You don’t have to be great to start, but you have to start to be great! So…absolutely! You have to start somewhere, right? At CrossFit West Ames, we offer our Bootcamp as an extensive, comprehensive beginner’s course. We can also schedule personal training to give you very specialized attention in a one-on-one setting if your schedule allows this better. If you have an extensive athletic background, contact us to set up an Intro Session to see if an accelerated route into one of our more advanced CrossFit programs is a good fit for you.
Why should I choose CrossFit over another fitness program?
Because you want results. You will truly be amazed at what your body is capable of and how much it can transform!
I hear CrossFit is dangerous! Is it?
Life is dangerous. Inactivity is dangerous. Over two-thirds of Americans are overweight or obese. More than 600,000 Americans die each year from heart disease. Any number of chronic diseases and illnesses are on the rise. Repetitive movements in a fixed posture performed over a limited range of motion is dangerous. Running, often thought of as the silver bullet to fix or stave off obesity or heart disease has one of the highest injury incidence rates of all physical activities – easily outpacing most organized sports. Machines can be even worse by removing the bone and muscle density benefits that explosiveness and impacts affords the body. Admittedly, CrossFit has earned its reputation. In its infancy, a typical CrossFit gym was equipped with over-enthusiastic and under-experienced trainers. Beginner athletes would enter, eager to smash their bodies into submission and the trainer, all too eager to encourage the smashing. New CrossFit or CrossFit-style gyms still pop up all the time with similar features. But many gyms have dedicated themselves to rising above this norm. At CrossFit West Ames, we are here to inspire you to move, to push yourself to become a person that you would not have believed possible. Through our years of hard work and dedication we have developed, improved, and restructured our best practices to give each person that walks in the door the highest quality experience possible. Our trainers are well experienced in progressions, injury prevention and the more intangible skills of knowing when to push an individual harder and when to have them back off. Not all CrossFit gyms are created equal, and CrossFit West Ames has been forged to exceed quality norms.
What if I have a pre-existing injury or physical limitation(s)?
We can help you work around it. We have an extensive selection of movements that we pull from to keep your body constantly guessing. If there are a handful of them that don’t work with your body, our coaches are trained to assist you in selecting alternatives, scaling back the load, and helping you progress towards your ultimate goals.

Can I get enough attention in a group setting?
Having a group to train with is critical to keep one’s motivation to show up high, and surrounding yourself with such individuals will inspire you to make progress far faster than you would have ever expected. Personalized attention, however, is important to safety and comfort in these group settings. We intentionally keep our classes small to ensure the trainer will have time to check in on each athlete, give them feedback, and check on their level of comfort. In our group classes, your learning will never end; you will get continued cues, corrections and high fives as needed. Our Bootcamp is a fantastic way to start with a group of people at a pace that is most conducive to learning the basics. We also offer personal training, workshops, seminars and specialty programs to ensure continuous improvement, education, and re-education when necessary.
I’m a female - will I get big and bulky doing CrossFit?
Most – but not all – people that walk in our doors have a goal of fat loss. Our approach is simple: eat properly in a manner that fits your athletic and aesthetic goals, work out with a mixture of strength work for muscular development and cardiovascular work to improve the function of our internal organs and expend caloric energy. By eating right, burning calories, and building muscle we get “toned” results – lowered fat levels and enough muscle to show it off. “Bulky” is what happens when you take the “lift heavy weights, minimize cardio and eat whatever you feel like” approach. Our Bootcamp teaches the fundamentals of nutrition to ensure you get the results you want. After the Bootcamp, we have regular seminars, workshops, and challenges to help motivate you to stay on track with your nutrition.
I’m a male and simply want to get ripped. Will CrossFit get me there?
CrossFit, when executed properly, is far more than thirty minute cardio sessions that chew away at fat, muscle and your soul. We want to give you a strong, healthy body and to get that we have you lift heavy, lift explosively, sprint and bound. These are all well-recognized elements to getting one a muscular build. But, just like the question about getting “bulky” above, a lot of your results will depend on the way you fuel your body. With adequate protein and a well-informed mixture of fats and smartly timed carbohydrates, dedicated CrossFit training, and intelligently metered recovery days, we can help you build the body of your dreams.
How often should I workout?
Everyone should make an effort to move, to break a sweat, to push the body through an unexpected range of motion each day. CrossFit training, however, will take this to a next level where we are breaking down muscles and putting significant hormonal stress on the body. Depending on the physical fitness levels and goals of the athlete, we would recommend three to six days of CrossFit training per week. In our Bootcamp, we host classes three times per week but also give lower-intensity homework challenges. Our unlimited members are welcome to attend up to six classes per week, but understanding the body’s capability and recovery rate is critical to making their decision.
What should I wear to workout?
Be comfortable! Athletic shorts, a t-shirt or tank top and a decent pair of running or athletic shoes. If you’re thinking about investing in a new pair of shoes for your CrossFit journey, let us know first – we have a few suggestions we could make!
I am coming to visit and would love to drop in. Can I and how much is it?
